About Volunteering for PuSh
Volunteer for the PuSh Festival, make some friends, and help spread the love. We have lots of opportunities for people with a variety of skills, passions and interests.
Each volunteer will receive:
- A PuSh Festival t-shirt
- An invitation to the Festival Wrap Party for the volunteer and a friend
- Free admission to shows in the PuSh Festival
- A volunteer badge that allows each volunteer exclusive access to additional PuSh Festival shows (subject to availability)
Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 4 shifts, and each 4 hour shift equals one show ticket. 4 shifts = 4 shows!
Volunteer Job Descriptions
Program Distribution
- This position is principally pre-festival – starting late November/early December (get your volunteer hours done early and enjoy the show after!)
- Arrange with Volunteer Coordinator to pick up festival programs from PuSh office (300-640 West Broadway)
- Drop off programs at designated points in various areas of the city (pick one that is close to you!)
- Return to designated spots and drop programs in same places 4 times, roughly 2 weeks apart
- Provide Volunteer Coordinator with an updated list of the places you’ve distributed to (if there are changes)
*** It's possible to distribute programs on a bike, but you need panniers or a basket.
Front of House
- Greet attendees at the door
- Examine tickets or passes to verify authenticity, using specified criteria
- Follow instructions of Front of House Manager
- Direct attendees to restrooms, telephones and other facilities
- Support box office personnel as needed
- Must be comfortable dealing with the public
Hospitality
- Set-up and clean-up for receptions
- Prepare and serve food to artists and patrons
- Restock and/or rearrange food and drinks, make it look clean and tidy
- Transport food and beverages at venues
- Must be comfortable dealing with the public
Artist Transportation
- A valid Driver’s License and your own vehicle, and $2 million liability insurance is crucial!
- Drive artists between hotel and venues
- Pick up and drop off artists to/from airport and designated points
- It is important for applicants for this position to have an excellent understanding of the geography of Vancouver including places to eat, sightsee, hang out, etc. This position also involves a lot of one-on-one time with the artists, so if you’re chatty, this is a great position for you!
- You will be reimbursed for mileage** and necessary parking*
* Please note that we have free parking in the Commercial Holding area at YVR (Vancouver International Airport) so if you decide to use the regular paid lots to part at the airport you will not be compensated.
** Please note that mileage tracking is valid from pickup to drop off point, not from volunteers’ homes

Volunteer Policy
- Protect Volunteer Personal Information in accordance with British Columbia's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy and the Personal Information Protection Acts.
- Treat Volunteers respectfully.
- Provide adequate training and information prior to a volunteer’s first shift.
- Provide a complete schedule of volunteer requirements prior to the start of the Festival (consideration will be given to requests from volunteers to work specific shows/venues).
- Provide 1 (one) complimentary ticket to each show worked or for each 4 (four) full hours of work completed.
- Provide volunteers with suitable identification for the duration of duties.
The Volunteer agrees to:
- Submit, prior to advertised deadline, a completed Volunteer Registration Form.
- Treat the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival Society respectfully.
- Act as an ambassador for the Festival to the Public using the information provided by the Festival.
- Commit to a minimum of 4 (four) shifts over the course of the Festival (consideration will be given to requests from volunteers to work specific shows/venues).
- Complete, in full, a minimum of 4 (four) shifts over the course of the Festival (in 2009: January 20 to February 8).
- Display identification provided by the Festival for the duration of each active shift.
Please Note:
- A volunteer will normally be a person 14 years of age or older. Special consideration may be given to younger volunteers.
- The Festival reserves the right to dismiss volunteers from duty without notice when volunteer’s behaviour is in direct contravention with any of the clauses above.
- Volunteers have the right to remove themselves from duty, and lodge an official complaint with Festival management, when Festival staff, volunteers, or artists’ behaviour is in direct contravention with any of the clauses above.
- Volunteers, by virtue of their contribution to the "PuSh International Performing Arts Festival Society" are entitled to a membership to the Society in exchange for the work that they do. Please note on the volunteer application form if you would like to be counted as a member of the Society and receive benefits, including invitations to special PuSh events, yearly newsletters and early access to PuSh pass purchasing!
Volunteer Perks
- A PuSh Festival t-shirt (please indicate size upon registration)
- An invitation to you and a friend to the Festival Wrap Party
- A volunteer name badge that will give you exclusive privileges to show admissions, subject to availability
- Each volunteer who commits to a minimum of 4 shifts will receive free admission to one show for 4 hours of work (4 shifts = 4 shows). If a volunteer does not commit to a minimum of 4 shifts, we cannot ensure entry.
*Please note that for Front of House shifts, the show worked is the complimentary show you’re entitled to.
Please reserve a show voucher if you will not work and watch a desired show. Requests must be received at a minimum of 72 hours before the show date and time
To reserve a show voucher, email Carolyn, the Volunteer Coordinator, at volunteer@pushfestival.ca with:
- subject line “Volunteer Show Request – last name, first name”
- your full name
- name, date, time of the show(s) you’d like to attend
- phone numberand/ or email to contact you for confirmation
Audience Services will contact you when your booking is confirmed.
Please be advised that if you don’t arrive to the show venue least 10 minutes before showtime, it will be given to someone on the COMP list. Please show your volunteer badge to the venue staff for admission!
There’s another way to see shows too! Volunteers can arrive at the venue box office 30 minutes before show time and ask to be added to the COMP List. The Front of House or Box Office will inform you if seats are still available. You must show them your volunteer badge!
What is meant by subject to availability? In the event that a show is sold out or very close to selling out, we will not be able to book volunteer vouchers ahead of time for the show.
